The Bathroom

Building tiny bathrooms is never a super fun experience. It’s painfully obvious why, but the tinier the bathroom the more awkward and uncomfortable the positions you’ll end up in while building it.

I want to start this off with addressing something I didn’t realize until I was writing this blog—I could have cleaned our sink better before taking the photos. Now that is out in the open, we’ll get on with it!

We decided early on in this build that we wanted a decent sized bathroom in here. Some people may say a bathroom is not too important in a camper build, and not to waste space on a room you only spend a small portion of your day in. Well, after three years of living in our Toyota camper with its microscopic bathroom, we respectfully disagree.

Changes to the Original

Our Airstream bathroom measures out to W45.5” x L67”. The original layout for this specific 1973 Land Yacht had the bathroom in the very back of the Airstream. And, if you don’t follow the decades of different Airstream designs, that was a huge flaw in the ‘70 era Airstreams that lead to frame separation and rot at the rear of the camper.

A rear bathroom did not suit what we needed in a camper that is only 23 feet long, so we changed the layout to have a side-bath. We also decided to eliminate the need for the typical RV black tank, and switched our toilet to a compost toilet.

Bathroom Storage

Even with a tiny bathroom we wanted to have the most amount of storage the space could allow. This bathroom only has one true cabinet door, which is under the sink to have access to plumbing, and ended up being a great place to store our Dyson vacuum cleaner. Aside from that one cabinet, we opted for baskets as our main bathroom storage.

Water Sources

We carried the black theme with fixtures into the bathroom with a matte black sink faucet, Nebia shower head, and delta shower faucet. We struck out trying to find a vessel sink to fit the space we needed with the look we wanted AND was in budget (who would have thought vessel sinks were so expensive!)

Instead we bought a diamond bit hole saw, and did a DIY vessel sink from a bowl we purchased at Target for $12. Again, I wish I would have cleaned it a bit better before taking these photos!

The Nebia Quattro Handheld is the shower head we installed in the bathroom. We have a YouTube video about the installation which includes info about the water saving capabilities this shower head has, and why it is a great option for an RV or van!

Other Details

The slat wall and the multi-colored sandy toned penny tile were two ideas we both loved, and we have had a really fun time adding details in this small space that don’t compete with the two patterns in here. And, the addition of the pine framed mirror has helped carry the view of the tile throughout the rest of the living space!
